6P: Practice

READING SCRIPTURE
A 6P SERIES ON PRACTICE: MAY 2025
Reading the Bible is probably one of the most well known habits of followers of Jesus, but if we’re honest, it’s also one of the most confusing. The Bible is full of inspiring verses and stories of people of faith, but it’s also contains content that feels confusing, violent, and backwards to modern readers. Simply “reading the Bible” isn’t so simple. In this practice series, we explore what the Bible IS so we can read the Bible how the Bible was intended to be read.

How To Study The Bible Class
This four week class will walk you through some foundational skills for making sense of the Bible and introduce you to essential tools and practices of tackling some of the Bible’s trickier parts.
Register for one of two different class sessions starting the week of May 4:
PRACTICE GUIDES
1
REVELATION
The Bible is revelation, God breaking into our closed universe with an invitation to life and imagination.
2
Meditation
How you read the Bible is shaped by what you think the Bible IS. The Bible is designed to be meditated on over a lifetime.
3
GOD & HUMAN
The Bible is a collaboration between God and human authors. When we focus on one to the neglect of the other, we set ourselves up for confusion.
4
CROSSing Cultures
Whenever you open your Bible, you are entering into a cross-cultural experience – across time, language, ethnicity, and class.
5
authoritative story
The Bible is telling a story of how the world is and inviting us to participate in the story as it is being written.
6
reading together
The Bible is meant to be read, interpreted, and applied in a community of practice

THE PRACTICE OF PRACTICE:
We embody the habits, values, and teachings of Jesus in our everyday lives.

THE SIX PRACTICES OF WHOLE-HEARTED DISCIPLESHIP
Following Jesus is more than just an idea. Jesus invites us to live life in his way, a life animated by love for God and love for our neighbors that takes on concrete habits in our everyday life. These six practices form a community rule of life for our church. A rule of life is a set of values or practices that give shape to our life following Jesus. They aren’t “rules,” but a pattern, a template, for what following Jesus looks like.

YOU WERE CREATED FOR COMMUNITY.
You weren’t meant to live life alone. That’s why at Wingfoot we believe the most important time you spend during your week isn’t an hour on Sunday but what happens every other day of the week as you live life with others.
JOIN A HOUSE CHURCH
The best way to work through these guides is in the context of community. House churches around the neighborhood will be discussing and practicing these things over the next few weeks. Find a community to join by here.
